Course Summary

The NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management is a useful addition to the NEBOSH General Certificate. The course equips delegates with the knowledge to carry out fire risk assessments of most low risk workplaces and to identify the range of fire protective and preventive measures required. An ideal course for the managers, supervisory staff and fire safety advisors who need to ensure that their organisation meets its responsibilities under the fire safety legalisation.

  • Unit NGC 1: Management of Health and Safety
  • Unit FC 1: Fire Safety and Risk Management
  • Unit FC 2: Practical Fire Risk Assessment

Ways to Study

  • Block Release – A structured classroom based course
    • Full Programme (including NGC1) consists of 9 days split into full week blocks (non continuous) including revision and exams.
    • Top Up (FC Elements only) consists of 4 day teaching block including revision and exams.

Teaching and Assessment

The assessment consists of written examinations and a practical assessment that checks your ability to conduct a fire risk assessment.

  • Full Programme (including NGC1)- two written exams each consisting a two hour written paper comprising of a 20 mark question and a ten 8 mark questions plus a practical fire risk assessment.
  • Top Up (FC Elements only) – one written exam consisting a two hour written paper comprising of a 20 mark question and a ten 8 mark questions plus a practical fire risk assessment.

Entry Requirements

There are no set entry requirements for the NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management, although good command of the English language is essential.

  • Top Up (FC Elements only) – Candidates must have previously completed either the NGC1 examination or Unit A of the NEBOSH Diploma within the last 5 years to be eligible for the full award. Individual unit awards maybe taken with no prior qualification.

Course Duration

NEBOSH stipulate a recommended teaching and study time for all their national programmes. The recommended teaching time for this course is:

  • Full Programme (including NGC1) – 70* taught hours and 55* hours of private study and background reading
  • Top Up (FC Elements only) – 33* taught hours and 32* hours of private study and background reading

Having gained the NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management you are eligible for membership of the institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) – Tech IOSH and Associate Membership of the IIRSM.

Holders of the NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management can progress onto a variety of programmes. Successful completion of the full programme (including NGC1) entitles you to exemptions from the NGC1 elements of:
