Derek is also actively documenting his consultancy experience in the form of international academic journals and has delivered lectures and seminars at Universities and symposiums on a global scale.

David has over 30 years experience in health & safety, qualifying as an Environmental Health Officer in 1976. He has spent 17 years in enforcement roles in the North East and for the past 17 years has been an adviser, consultant and trainer. David is the chairman of the RoSPA affiliated Sunderland Safety Group. David has in depth knowledge of noise issues in the workplace.

He has worked for much of this in the chemical industry including 10 years in SH&E at ICI and six years as a Group Safety manager for a global chemical corporation. Gary has experience of high tier COMAH reports and training and competence schemes in this environment.Gary also has in depth knowledge of risk & COSHH assessment and also safety management systems.

With the foundation of an engineering apprenticeship and over 20 years experience in senior engineering and manufacturing roles, Alan has significant knowledge as well as practical experience of Health and Safety regulatory requirements. He has worked in the glass, plastics, and bulk paper processing industries and more recently in aerospace manufacture. Alan has specialist knowledge of manufacturing process and machinery safety and guarding.

Mary Argyraki was previously a senior consultant with Environmental Resources Management (ERM), one of the world’s largest environmental companies. Mary is also an IEMA registered auditor.

Monica PriceAfter spending ten years as a formulation chemist for a paint manufacturer Monica joined the University of Sunderland in 1992. Monica is now a senior lecturer teaching pollution monitoring & control and basic biology and chemistry into a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. During Monica’s time at the University she has developed research in the fields of air pollution monitoring, specifically airborne particles and their impact upon health, contaminated land and its bioremediation using brewery spent grain and the management and minimisation of waste.

Jonathan Backhouse

Jonathan, Occupational Safety and Health Practitioner, with over nine years experience of delivering numerous accredited and non-accredited courses in health and safety. He has been delivering NEBOSH national courses since 2008 and international since 2010, he is also a NEBOSH examiner. Jonathan gained occupational experience by spending two years in catering management four years in engineering management, where he implemented a Health, Safety and Environmental Management System and developed BSI Quality Manual.

Stuart Turnbull

Stuart has spent over 20 years in the construction industry originally training as a Quantity Surveyor in the private sector; he joined Newcastle City Council in 1992 and is currently a Head of Service within the Technical Services division with responsibility for all aspects of Design, Surveying and Asset Management. Newcastle City Council is an Investors in People organisation, with ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001 accreditation. Stuart is an Associate tutor who brings with him a wealth of both site based and practical experience across a number of key construction disciplines, and currently has corporate responsibility in CDM, Asbestos and Legionella management and Accessibility as well as acting as a Health and Safety ambassador within the council.

Mark Armstrong

With over 10 years experience within the industry, Mark’s expertise lies in asbestos management, occupational hygiene and health and safety management. Mark was educated at Durham School, The Nottingham Trent University and Newcastle University.  His professional qualifications include a BSc (hons) Occupational Health and Safety Management, an MSc in Occupational Hygiene and Chartered Membership of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.
